Rain in the mountains tends to arrive suddenly and leave just as fast, and this is the best place in town to sit it out. The Art Center runs more than thirty-five exhibits and events a year across several galleries, showing work by local artists in painting, photography, clay and quilting, and it is free to walk around and look.
What makes it worth a proper afternoon is the teaching side. There is a full programme of classes and workshops in everything from watercolour and stained glass to weaving, botanical printing and woodburning, and plenty of them suit beginners. If you can get a family session booked, a rainy day turns into the thing everyone talks about afterwards. There is also an art supply store in the building, which is useful if you want to buy materials and carry the project back to the cabin.
Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm, closed Mondays. Ring ahead about class availability, as the popular ones fill early and space is limited. It sits at the western end of Main Street, an easy stop before or after lunch in town.
