Hiking Near Blue Ridge, Georgia: Five Trails for Every Level

A rocky forest hiking trail on the Benton MacKaye Trail in North Georgia, dappled with sunlight through the trees

The Blue Ridge Mountains have more trail than you could walk in a month, and the good news for mixed-ability groups is that the range runs from a five-minute stroll to a serious day out. These five cover most of it.

1. Your own trail, on the property

The cabin sits on six acres with a private quarter-mile trail running through it. It is the ideal first walk of the trip: no driving, no planning, and a good way to see who in the group is actually up for more.

2. Toccoa River Swinging Bridge — easy

About a quarter-mile from the parking area at the end of Forest Service Road 816, ending at a 270-foot suspension bridge over the Toccoa. Almost everyone can manage it. The last stretch of forest road is rough gravel, so check conditions before you set out.

3. Fighting Town Creek Nature Park — easy to moderate

Ten-plus miles of hiking and biking trail just up the road from the cabin, mostly gentle and well maintained. Good for a morning when you want movement without commitment, and the best option if anyone has brought a bike.

4. Aska Adventure Area — moderate

South of town between Lake Blue Ridge and the Toccoa, this network links up around seventeen miles of trail with proper ridgeline views. Pick a section rather than trying to do it all, and take more water than you think you need in summer.

5. Benton MacKaye Trail — as hard as you want

The long-distance trail runs right through Fannin County, so you can join it for two miles or twelve. This is the one for the walkers in the family who want a real day out while everyone else takes the lake.

Practical notes

Mountain weather turns quickly, so carry a layer even on a warm morning. Phone signal is patchy to non-existent on most of these trails, so download your map before you leave the cabin. Start early in summer, both for the heat and the parking.
