There is no bad time to be in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but the seasons here are genuinely different from one another, and the right one depends on what your group wants from the week. Here is an honest breakdown.
Spring: March to May
The quietest of the busy seasons and, for our money, the most underrated. Wildflowers come through the forest floor, the waterfalls are running properly after winter rain, and the orchards start with strawberries in late spring. Days are mild, evenings still want a fire pit. Rain is common, which is worth planning around rather than worrying about.
Summer: June to August
This is lake season. Long, warm days, water at a temperature people will actually swim in, and enough daylight to fit a hike and a lake afternoon into the same day. It is humid in the valleys, though the elevation around Blue Ridge keeps things noticeably cooler than Atlanta. Expect a short, dramatic afternoon thunderstorm most weeks. Book early for July.
Autumn: September to November
The headline season. Leaf colour usually peaks somewhere in the second half of October, the orchards are in full swing, and the Scenic Railway is at its best. It is also the busiest and most expensive time to be here, and weekends sell out months ahead. If you can travel midweek or aim for early October or the first week of November, you will get most of the colour with a fraction of the traffic.
Winter: December to February
Quiet, cheap and surprisingly good. Bare trees mean views you cannot see in summer, the town is calm, and a 4,600 square foot cabin with a fire pit, a hot tub and a game room is a genuinely appealing place to be cold outside of. Snow happens but rarely settles for long. This is the season for groups who want to stay in rather than rush around.
So which is best?
For first-time visitors with a mixed-age group, late September or early October is hard to beat: warm enough for the lake, cool enough for hiking, and the colour starting to turn. For value, come in January or February. For a straightforward family week outdoors, take June.
Whichever season suits you, check availability early. Our autumn and summer dates go first, and we are happy to talk through timings before you commit.
