Blue Ridge is a small mountain town with an unusually big range of things to do, which is exactly what you need when your group spans three generations and nobody wants the same thing. Here are the days out that consistently work.
Ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
A four-hour round trip from the 1905 depot downtown, following the Toccoa River to McCaysville and Copperhill with a two-hour stop for lunch. Grandparents get a seat and a view, kids get open-air cars, and nobody has to drive. Book ahead for autumn weekends.
Spend a day on Lake Blue Ridge
Roughly 3,000 acres of clear water ringed by national forest. You can rent a pontoon for the day, swim off the beach at Morganton Point, or just find a quiet bank and let the afternoon go. It is the easiest way to keep teenagers and toddlers happy at the same time.
Pick your own at Mercier Orchards
Four generations of apple growing just north of town, with u-pick fields, a bakery, fried apple pies, and a cider bar for the grown-ups. Go in the morning, especially in autumn.
Walk out to the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge
At 270 feet it is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi, and it sits about a quarter-mile from the parking area, so almost everyone can make it there and back. Wear proper shoes for the gravel forest road.
Wander downtown
An afternoon on Main Street covers most tastes: galleries, outfitters, a proper toy shop, and enough coffee to get everyone through. It is a short drive from the cabin, which makes it an easy filler for a slow day.
Or stay put
Some of the best days here never leave the property. Six private acres, a quarter-mile trail of your own, the pickleball court, the fire pit and the hot tub cover a lot of ground without anyone getting in the car.
